Parts of Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic are affected by flooding. In the hardest-hit areas, the entire infrastructure has collapsed. Telephone, water, sewage and supply lines of electricity, gas and train traffic are interrupted.
To date, 150 people are reported dead. In addition, there are still numerous missing persons, although due to the lack of communications, there is still hope that the missing people have found shelter somewhere.
There is a huge relief effort underway. Numerous companies are providing heavy equipment free of charge, as well as donations of materials and clothing. Hundreds of volunteers are coming from the nearby villages to clear away mud and garbage. The German Armed Forces are on site with divers and recovery vehicles to make the roads and bridges passable again for the relief workers.
